PAINE, Richard, Louisa (?), & Ann (Stocks)

By Cliff McCarthy, 2016

Richard Paine was the son of William Paine and Ann (Nailand) Paine. He was born before the 11th day of November 1810, when he was baptized at the church in Heathfield, Sussex, England. He was a blacksmith by trade and lived on North Street in Winchelsea for most of his adult life.

He was first married to Louisa, last name unknown. The date of their marriage is unknown, but Phinehas, their oldest child, was born about 1839. Louisa gave birth to three more children before she died in 1846. She was buried in Winchelsea in April of that year.

In May of 1847, Richard married Ann Stocks, daughter of Henry Stocks, at Winchelsea. She gave birth to three more children, including our ancestor Ann Selina (Paine) Cooke.

By 1891, Richard is listed as a “retired blacksmith” and is living with his daughter and son-in-law at Cleveland Villa in Winchelsea. No death information has been found for Richard or Ann Paine.
