PUNDERSON, John & Damaris (Atwater)

Deacon John Punderson, Jr., son of John & Margaret Punderson, was born about 1643 and baptized in October 1644 at New Haven. In March of 1676, he was designated the “overseer of the fortifications.”  In 1677, he married Damaris Atwater, daughter of David & Damaris (Sayre) Atwater. They were together 44 years and had nine children before her death in 1711.

He was a deacon of the First Church of New Haven from 1689 to 1730. He died on 23 January 1729/30.

The following inscriptions were copied from gravestones in Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven:

“Here Lyeth ye
Body of Deacon
John Punderson
Who Died Jany
ye 23, 1729
Aged 86 Years
———————
He was the only son of
John Punderson, Esq.
Who was among the first
Emigrants to this colony from
England. From him descended
all the Punderson Family.”

JOHN PUNDERSON was born Abt. 1643 in New Haven, CT, and died 23 January 1729/30 in New Haven, CT.  He married DAMARIS ATWATER 5 November 1667 in New Haven, CT, daughter of DAVID ATWATER and DAMARIS SAYRE.  She was born 2 November 1649 in New Haven, New Haven Co., CT, and died 14 December 1711.
