Sergt. Samuel Alling, of New Haven, Connecticut was a blacksmith like his father. He was the son of Roger and Mary (Nash) Alling. Samuel married (1) Elizabeth, daughter of John Winston, who bore him six sons, and died in 1682. He married (2) Sarah, daughter of Deacon John Chidsey (or Chedsey), by whom he had two sons and three daughters.

At the New Haven Court session of 11 February 1666, Samuel Alling was among “sundry young persons disorderly meeting together at the shop of John Winston, and drinking of liquor to excess & drunkenness, when their parents & Masters of most of them were humbling themselves before ye lord in an extraordinary manner.” Samuel Alling was fined 5 shillings.  A few months later, he married John Winston’s daughter.

At a Town Meeting held 23 November 1674, Samuel Alling was chosen “Keeper of the brand booke.” This would be the record of the brand marks for owners of horses and cattle. In 1678, he was chosen constable, along with Jeremiah How.

Samuel Alling left no will before he died on 28 August 1709. On the 20th October 1709, his wife was appointed administratrix of his estate and Joseph Moss and John Punderson appraised the estate, which was inventoried at 526 pounds, 7 shillings. Samuel, the eldest son, received a double portion at 96 pounds, and Roger had already received his part. The other eight children were given 48 pounds each. John was given a right in the homestead, which was on the corner of Church and Center streets in New Haven, and other property. Daniel and Caleb received land at Oyster Point. In 1711 Caleb and Esther chose Sarah, their mother, to be their guardian.

In all, Samuel Alling had seven sons and three daughters that lived to maturity, and had families. Samuel, the eldest son, settled in Newark, N. J., and his brother John at Elizabeth, N. J. James resided at Wallingford, Conn.; Theophilus removed to East Haven; Daniel lived at Orange, Conn., and Caleb at Hamden, Conn.
